Maithili’s POV
My parents were devastated. The news hit them like a storm they never saw coming. I had never seen them this broken. They cried—cried until their tears ran dry. My father’s anger was a raging fire, and my mother’s sorrow was a flood of despair. She fainted after crying so much, clutching my hand as though I’d slip away too.
“What will people say?” she wept, gasping for air. “What will they say about my daughter? How will she face this humiliation for someone else’s mistake?”
I tried to be strong for them. I tried to console them, holding back my own storm of emotions. I tried to make them stable, but inside, I was barely holding on.
Then came the next blow. We were sitting with my in-laws—no, correction, my brother Varun’s in-laws. They were apologizing profusely, their heads hung in shame, saying sorry to me, my parents, and my siblings. But amidst their apologies, there it was—a request.
“Please,” they said. “Don’t cancel Ananya and Varun’s wedding because of Gautham’s stupidity.”
Wow. Just… wow. That’s what they thought of us? That we’d use their son’s betrayal as a reason to sabotage my brother’s happiness? I couldn’t even muster anger, just exhaustion. It felt like every breath I took pulled me deeper into a pit I couldn’t escape.
I wanted to run. Run away from this chaos. Run away from the tears, the stares, the whispers. I wanted to sit somewhere quiet and try to find myself again. But I couldn’t. I had to face it all.
Oh God, please, just make me invisible.
As I sat there, drowning in my thoughts, I felt it. A gaze—unwavering, piercing, constant. Someone was watching me. I didn’t look up. My head and heart felt so heavy that I didn’t bother.

But then I heard coughing—loud, persistent. Snapping out of my haze, I went to the kitchen and fetched a glass of water. When I turned to leave, he was there, standing in the doorway, arms folded, leaning casually but with eyes sharp as a blade.
His gaze traveled over me, head to toe, with an intensity that made my skin prickle. He coughed again, and then, without warning, stepped closer. Before I could react, he moved so fast that I was suddenly trapped between him and the shelf behind me.
I gasped, my pulse quickening.
And then he said and did the most unexpected thing.
