Shadows of Doubt

Maithili’s POV

A week remains until my marriage, yet something feels off. I don’t feel like myself around Gautham. Ours was an arranged alliance, unlike my brother Varun and Gautham’s sister Ananya, who found love in each other. They convinced our families, and now here they are—happy and glowing, lovebirds preparing for their wedding.

Shall I tell you a secret? I’ve witnessed their romance seven times—yes, seven! Haha. Lakshmi Aunty and Mahesh Uncle have been kind and welcoming, and they adore me. Now, here I am, about to marry their eldest son. Of course, who wouldn’t like me?

But Gautham… he’s different. He’s not the warm, charming man I imagined. He’s sharp, opinionated, and has this need to dominate every conversation. Recently, we had a disagreement about the gifts and clothes my father sent to their family. He outright said, “We don’t even wear these clothes on normal days.”

I was shocked. Hurt, even. I didn’t expect such harsh words from him. I thought he was the perfect man—well-educated, successful, with a face that could charm anyone. He seemed like the kind of person I dreamed of marrying. But now?

Now, I’m starting to wonder. Is this how marriage works? Differences, misunderstandings… and this constant feeling of suppression? He didn’t just insult my parents’ choices—he diminished my voice too.

Am I overthinking? Maybe this is normal. Or maybe it isn’t. I don’t know. I feel so confused.

Gautham’s POV

Maithili Pandith. What a beauty. The first time I saw her was when she came with her parents to discuss Ananya and Varun’s wedding. From that moment, I knew—I wanted her as my wife.

She’s everything a man desires: intelligent, strong, independent, with a beauty that leaves you breathless. When I told my parents I wanted to marry her, they were delighted. And for a while, I was on cloud nine, imagining our life together.

Until... my boss called me.

It was the same day I was supposed to accompany Maithili for our wedding shopping. I was ready to leave when the call came.

In her cabin, Apeksha looked different—her eyes red, tears rolling down her cheeks, her usually perfect hair disheveled.

Me: “Is something wrong?”
Boss: “That’s the point—you don’t see what’s wrong.”
Me: “What do you mean?”
Boss: with trembling lips “You’re getting married?”
Me: “Yes, I sent you an invitation. I’d love for you to be there.”
Boss: “I can’t. I can’t stand by and watch. Don’t you see? I love you. I need you.”
Me: stunned “What?”
Boss: “Do you really think you got promoted solely because of your work? Yes, you’re good, but there are others, Gautham. Others in line for that position.”
Me: hesitantly “I thought it was my hard work…”
Boss: “It was. But my feelings for you played a part too.”

Her words hung in the air, heavy and unsettling.

Me: “I don’t know what to say.”
Boss: “Don’t say anything. Just call off your marriage and think about us. I’ll wait for you, Gautham. We could have a future together—one far better than what you’ll get with Maithili.”

Apeksha, wealthy, influential, and powerful, suddenly seemed like an opportunity I couldn’t ignore. What could Maithili offer me that compared? Apeksha wasn’t just confessing her feelings—she was showing me a life I never dared dream of.

And now, here I am, torn between two worlds. On one side is Maithili, a beauty with a heart full of simplicity and intellect. On the other, Apeksha, a rich, powerful woman who could elevate my life beyond imagination.

But how do I tell my family? How do I break this marriage when there’s only a week left? I’m frustrated, confused, and terrified of what’s next. What do I do? What can I do?
